Omega Centauri

Omega Centauri | C80 | NGC 5139

Omega Centauri (NGC 5139) is the largest and brightest globular cluster in the Milky Way, located approximately 17,000 light-years away in the constellation Centaurus. Unlike typical globular clusters, which contain stars of similar age and composition, Omega Centauri exhibits a diverse range of stellar populations, suggesting a complex formation history. Spanning about 150 light-years across, it contains millions of stars and is visible to the naked eye under dark skies. Astronomers believe it may be the remnant core of a dwarf galaxy that was disrupted and absorbed by the Milky Way.
