Thunderbird South is actively engaged in a range of projects, collecting astronomical data and imagery to explore the universe. We aim to make these initiatives accessible and engaging for both UBC students and the wider public. Below, you’ll find a summary of our outreach efforts.

Classroom Engagement

We are committed to incorporating Thunderbird South into UBC’s academic curriculum, recognizing that hands-on experience is more important than ever in astronomy education.
In ASTR 405: Astronomical Laboratory, students operate Thunderbird South independently to gain practical experience collecting astronomical data.
In ASTR 200: Frontiers of Astrophysics, students helped select the subjects for Thunderbird South’s next imaging sessions, directly shaping the observing schedule.
We are actively looking for new ways to integrate Thunderbird South into teaching, research, and outreach across UBC.

Star Parties

We regularly host Star Parties, where Thunderbird South is operated live in front of an audience of UBC undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty from the Physics & Astronomy department. These events offer a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience with telescope operation, ask questions, and enjoy community with fellow interested peers. They’re casual, engaging—and yes, there’s usually pizza.
